Surface Piercing Problems

Surface2A surface piercing is a relatively new type of piercing that involves inserting a metal barbell under the skin. The surrounding skin then heals to cover this piercing which then just appears to be a lump underneath then skin.

There are several issues with this type of piercing, it can actually be quite dangerous, with a number of piercing studious refusing to do surface piercings.

A major problem is that the body rejects the surface piercing. Usually this happens in the early stages of the piercing – the skin will not accept the barbell and will ‘push it out’. This can also happen even after everything is completely healed, as it is just the bodies way of removing unknown objects from underneath the skin.

There are several ways you can limit these problems. By choosing body jewellery that is appropriate for your surface piercing you may be able to limit your chances of your body rejecting it. High quality metal barbells should be used in all cases. You should also always visit a reputable, trained piercist, who will be able to give you professional advice if anything was to go wrong. Good luck!
